No Smoking

Jay looks up from a sullen gaze
And tries to fix his hair
He fumbles for a cigarette
But there’s no smoking here

The hospital is cold and clean
He waits to hear the news
But time don’t move in a place like this
There’s only love and fear

Said “Tell me what the deal is, sir,
I know I must be wrong”
He sat down all calm as hell
And just stared at the wall

He starts to call his friends and family
He can hardly breathe
His coffee’s cold; his face is pale
He don’t have much to say

‘Cept “Tell me that it’s all a joke
I know I must be wrong”
He sat down all calm as hell
And just stared at his phone

A sunny day, he’s all dressed up
A preacher says his piece
The grass is green in clumps of dirt
That piled at his feet

Said “Tell me that it’s all okay
I know I must be wrong”
He sat down all calm as hell
And just stared at the ground
